Academy Award nominations will be announced on January 25th. So, just so I can say “I told you so” later, I’m releasing my Oscar picks a few weeks early. No offense meant to my movie critic brethren, but generally speaking most movie critics are kinda nerdy and go for the obvious high brow choices at Oscar time. So, I’ll give you two picks in the major categories. One will be the obvious Oscar choice and the other will be my personal choice. Let’s begin with best movie. My Choice: The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg. A great true story about a boxer seeking redemption. The fight scenes are the most realistic I’ve ever seen in a boxing movie. Oscar goes to: The Social Network. The before mentioned nerds will go for this true “geek tragedy”. Believe it or not, the Duplass Brothers’ new film Cyrus, starring John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Catherine Keener and Jonah Hill, hits theaters in two weeks! Or at least it hits New York and Los Angeles and then expands to more cities (check out the list of cities here). Fox Searchlight has aired a new TV spot for Cyrus (via TheMovieBox) that’s an impressive little mini-trailer. It explains the plot, gives you a little taste of the comedy, just barely enough to get you in theaters. It’s a great film that we all loved at Sundance and highly suggest. This may only be his third feature film, but I still think it’s appropriate to call Spike Jonze a visionary filmmaker. His work, both on the big screen and on the small screen (all of his music videos), is some of the most honest, creative, and unique I’ve ever seen. A few weeks back, after seeing Spike’s Where the WIld Things Are, I went to the Beverly Hilton Hotel to interview Mr. Jonze, and he invited me into bed. I’m not even joking - Spike and I got into bed together (not under the covers, of course!) to talk about bringing Maurice Sendak’s beloved children’s book to life on the big screen exactly the way he first envisioned it. I wish I had a photo, or video, to prove that we did this in bed, but I don’t. Magnet debuted the official US trailer for John Woo’s Red Cliff on Apple last week, which will finally (after two years) be hitting US theaters in November as part of the Six Shooter Film Series V2. We actually ran the very first teaser trailer for Red Cliff back in February of 2008, just to show you how long this film has been around. I still haven’t seen it but I am looking forward to seeing it, just because looks so incredibly epic. As expected, this doesn’t feature any dialogue, so as to not scare away Americans who hate subtitles. It does look pretty damn good, it may just be tough to sit through four hours of this.
